Orthodontic treatment is recommended for correcting a host of orthodontic issues such as crowded teeth, misaligned teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, incorrect jaw positioning, as well as joint disorders of the jaw.
Aside from conventional metal braces, these days, individuals can choose from various types of braces to suit their needs. Here at Wermerson Orthodontics in our South Cliff and West 26th offices in Sioux Falls, SD, our dentist, Dr. Chris Wermerson offers the following types of braces.
Traditional Metal Braces
Metal braces have immensely progressed since their inception and are now more comfortable and lighter in feel and weight than the older counterparts. They’re crafted from high-quality stainless steel and come with metal brackets that will be attached to the teeth with the use of dental cement. These brackets are connected to each other using a super-thin archwire that forces the teeth to gradually move into their proper positions.
These archwires are linked to the metal brackets with tiny elastics, also called O-rings or ligatures, which your dentist will change when you come in for adjustments in our South Cliff or West 26th office in Sioux Falls, SD. Some metal braces, like seld-ligating braces, don’t require O-rings.
Invisalign treatment involves wearing a range of custom-made slim, clear, thermoplastic aligners or trays that look like mouth guards. You can remove them when doing your oral hygiene routine and when eating. You’ll need to change them every two to six weeks for the next tray in your treatment plan and must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours daily.
In some cases, dentists will recommend Invisalign after completing conventional orthodontic treatment. This will help in maintaining your results until the teeth have stopped moving and settled down into their proper places.
Ceramic braces function exactly like metal braces. However, their brackets are crafted from clear ceramic material instead of metal. The wires themselves also come in tooth-colored variations, giving you more of that virtually invisible look.
When determining which orthodontic option will be most effective for your specific cases, your dentist will need to take into consideration some crucial factors. These include your particular orthodontic concerns, the severity of your problem, your age, your oral health, and your personal preferences.
