Turning your Expansion Appliance

Always make turns as instructed by Dr. Wermerson or his assistant, do not make more turns than directed. Please only use the key given at your appliance delivery appointment to the make turns.

The appliance is used to move the upper teeth out past the lower teeth. Space is normal and means the turns are being done correctly. The space will close once braces are placed.

The appliance is not removable so we ask that you are aware of the following:

  • Use toothpaste containing fluoride and brush all surfaces after each meal
  • Food may get trapped in the bars and around the bands of this appliance; though brushing is very important, vigorous rinsing/swishing with water is also suggested
  • Cut down on sugary foods and beverages, including pop and sports drinks
  • Avoid hard foods such as nuts, pretzels, ice, and hard candies
  • Avoid sticky foods such as taffy, caramel, tootsie rolls and gum
  • Avoid putting fingers in your mouth or playing with the appliance, this can cause it to loosen
  • Some brief minor discomfort in the upper palate and dental areas is expected with each activation
  • If irritation to gums or roof of the mouth occurs, increase brushing and flossing and do gentle circular motions with your toothbrush
  • You may experience excessive saliva with this appliance being placed, this too will subside within the first few days
  • If the appliance becomes loose please call our office immediately
